Iris Apfel föddes i New York och drev 1950–92 tillsammans med maken Carl Apfel (1914–2015) textilföretaget Old World Weavers med reproduktion av historiska tyger som specialitet. Vita huset i Washington D.C. hörde till uppdragsgivarna.
