I ett stort antal arbeten diskuterade Bell utvecklingstendenser i det västerländska samhället. Bl.a. märks The End of Ideology (1960), The Coming of Post-Industrial Society (1973), där han lanserade begreppet ”postindustriellt samhälle”, och The Cultural Contradiction in Capitalism (1976).
