Lyell [laiʹəl], Sir Charles, född 14 november 1797, död 22 februari 1875, brittisk naturforskare, en av förgrundsgestalterna i geologins utveckling under 1800-talet. Hans främsta insats var boken Principles of Geo­logy: Being an Attempt to Explain the Former Changes of the Earth’s Surface by Reference
